After the experience in Marocco we wanted our traveling to be continued with the dream of independence while having our home with us as well. And the freedom to choose the route in a certain way as well as independent from the given roads.
So, we visited the www.abenteuer-allrad.de in Bad Kissingen to get more information and a feeling for the field. Clearly not all what we have seen is ours – tremendous vehicles made to have offroad races is one of it. But having fun with machines in extreme situations is something the child in me loves to see and to test under safe and regulated conditions. We also realized that there is a wide spread of investment from self made homes up to fully equipped explorer trucks for 250.000 bugs. Luxury inclusive.
We oriented our self to the principle which we started in the past already; to minimize our impact as much as possible but on the other side to keep some comfort. So, the list of requirements was prioritized in that way:
- Hard cover living home with modular tent for sleeping
- As much as possible a off -road vehicle
- Minimize resource consumption; so take care of weight and size
- A good sleeping “area”
- In- and outside kitchen
- State of the art technology – to safe fuels – to reduce emissions – to use solar power
Two possibilities would fulfill this requirements list.
First is a 4 x 4 Camper on a VW T4/T5 or Daimler Sprinter basis.
Second a Pickup Truck with a modular Cabin. Three models were on our short list.
- ExKab (www.exkab.de)
- Cramer Fernweh Mobil
- Gazell
This needs further investigation.
